Tournaments / Kid of the Hill - A new type of speedrun event!
« on: August 24, 2016, 11:35:43 AM »
Hello everyone,

In our never-ending pursuit of fun community events, we believe we may have something to satisfy your need for such an event!

We would like to propose a new 2-month speedrunning event: Kid of the Hill!

Kid of the Hill is a spin on the classic "King of the Hill" style of tournament play.

What does King of the Hill mean?

King of the Hill is a style of tournament play that typically involves the #1 seeded participant vs. any other participant in an effort to hold their spot as #1. If they win, they keep their spot (their "hill"), if not, the one who beats them is crowned as #1. This is a classic KOTH-style event.

So how does this relate to Kid of the Hill?

We want to use this KOTH style of play and implement it into a challenge of speedrunning various fangames. Here's how it will work:

-A pool of 25 fangames is chosen from us, the event organizers. This pool is public knowledge, and will include fangames of varying skill levels.

-A King will be chosen for the first round, and the King will decide 1 week before they race what fangame will be played out of the pool of fangames provided.

-After a fangame has been chosen for the week, that game will be announced to all participants and everyone will have exactly 1 week to run the chosen game and get the fastest time possible.

-Runners are to submit their best times to Speedrun.com at any time during the week, up until the day before the race.

-The runner (that is not the current King) that submits the fastest time to Speedrun.com is chosen as the "challenger" to the King for the race on the next day.

-The race will be featured on a Twitch Channel (TBD) as King vs. Challenger (think of the 2-player races on our fangame marathon layout!)

-If the King wins, they stay King. If the Challenger wins, they become the new King.

-The race is open to all participants, however, only the challenger may knock the King off of the Hill on any given week. So if you happen to beat the King but you are not the challenger, better luck next time!

-Immediately following the race, the King that is determined from the race will pick another fangame from the pool, and we start a new week of racing.

=============================================================

Does this sound like a fun event to participate in? This would require no sign-ups, just show up and play! I believe it both gives our community a unique race feel to it, and promotes both racing and submissions to speedrun.com's fangames.

Let us know what you think in this thread. This thread is solely for feedback and suggestion purposes - all information-related material relating to this event will be posted in a different thread once dates and times are set. We would really like to know if this would have a lot of runners! You can also ask questions about the event at our channels, www.twitch.tv/tehjman1993 or www.twitch.tv/mrssfireball

Thanks,

Tournaments / Fangame Marathon 2016 Wrap-Up/Future Considerations
« on: June 13, 2016, 11:51:11 AM »
Hello aiwanna community,

We have finally concluded this year's Fangame Marathon. We hope you enjoyed the crazy events and runs we had during the marathon! Some runs left us in complete awe, such as Nader's Sunpossible Churatch clear or the 3-second difference in the Uhuhu 2 race!

The channel was viewed by both veteran players and new players alike - we received over 1,000 new follows over the course of the marathon with a large amount of new players asking questions such as, "What are these games?", "Where do I download them?", and "How many of these type of games are there?" Our community was extremely responsive to new players, and I congratulate you for that. The schedule itself went very well - despite a slight rocky start, we were largely on-schedule (no more than 15 minutes off at any given point) when transitioning between runs. This marathon was simply fantastic, thank you!

What was your favorite part of the marathon? Let us know in the comments below!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding some questions that have been asked frequently:

When is the next Fangame Marathon? Is this a yearly thing?

While it seems as if Fangame Marathon has indeed turned into a yearly thing, I cannot say with certainty what will become of this event. Therefore, the next Marathon event is unannounced. This does not mean there will be no future events!

I missed a run! Do you have the VODs up anywhere?

The VODs for the marathon will be up on Fangame Marathon's twitch page in the very near future. In addition to this, the VODs will be uploaded to YouTube and put into a playlist for easy viewing! There is also the development of a highlight reel for this marathon, which will include your favorite events - from awe-inspiring to downright hilarious. This will also be available on YouTube in the near future.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some considerations for future events (relating to last year's event, and looking forward):

Self-Promotions: This went way better than last year's event. We did not have anyone go overboard with advertising for their own channel. In fact, some runners did not plug their own channel at all! Overall I am very impressed with the improvement from last year. Halfway through the marathon, FFZ enabled a button to follow the runner directly from the marathon's twitch page, so we hope this helped bring exposure to your channel.

Time Estimates: Excellent estimates, hands-down. No more discussion is needed here.

Variety of Games: Also excellent. There were little (or no) complaints regarding the variety of games shown on the marathon. We believe the extra events and other non-speedrun events (such as Pat's Fangame Demonstration) really helped with this over last year's event. Great job! We hope that future events would emulate the style of diversity in games that this year's event did.

Spam and memes: Overall, very contained and appropriate. Towards the end of the marathon we had a few inappropriate copy-pastas started up, but these were quickly squelched and not started again. The moderation did a fantastic job, and the community was very respectful towards the runners. We are very proud of this, great job!

Professional Attitudes: Fantastic attitudes displayed by both our runners and our community viewing the event. I have zero examples to point out of someone going too far with a comment, excessively cursing, etc. We hope that future events would emulate the attitudes displayed during this event.

The RTMP server: Let's face it - the marathon set off on the wrong foot. We had to delay the starting time and pan out server issues. However, for the rest of the marathon, this server was fine for all other broadcasters. We are not entirely sure what happened in the beginning with the server issues. Despite this, the server held up very well for the rest of the marathon, and I would encourage use of this style of broadcasting in future events. I believe Twitch was also undergoing a few connection issues over the weekend (read: E3), so this is largely out of our control.

New Players/Viewers: We had a large amount of new viewers for this marathon, as stated above. I am extremely impressed by the community's willingness to open their arms to new players and invite them into the community. In fact, I received quite a few comments throughout the marathon stating that they are "very happy" the chat didn't belittle them because they asked a "new player" question. We hope that some of these new players find their way to these forums, as well as our twitch team. Thank you, community!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did I miss anything? Let us know what you want to talk about in the comments below. We ask that you do not directly tie any names to any consideration listed above, nor to any consideration you may want to talk about. Please feel free to type anything on your mind regarding the marathon, we want as much feedback as possible to make future events even better. Last year's comments really helped us shape this event into a better one!

Thanks again, community. We are very proud.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood morning IWBTG community!

It's about time for the megathread of everything you need to know about the upcoming Fangame Marathon! This thread will be constantly tweaked, edited, and updated with latest updates and news regarding FGM, so keep this page bookmarked!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This topic contains the following:

I. Runner & Volunteer Submissions/Scheduling
II. Official Date(s)/Time(s)
III. Rules/Layout of FGM for both runners and broadcasters
IV. Extraneous Information pertaining to FGM (communications, events, etc.)
V. Prior FGM (2015) considerations
VI. Donations

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I. Runner Submissions

The runner and volunteer submission page can be found here: [PAST DEADLINE BUCKAROOS]

The submissions list can be found here: httpss://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vUbD92E1Ta9lnV7SBn77qndQTu_zoXDX_2UjySLvHj8/edit#gid=0

The last day for submissions of runs and/or events is May 13th!

The schedule can be found here: httpss://horaro.org/fgm2016/schedule

Please use this form to submit a run and submit volunteer work. Please note that a submission does not necessarily mean an accepted submission. It will largely depend on dates and times that work for runners. We ask that runners be as flexible as possible, as it makes scheduling much easier and allows for more variety within the schedule, and includes more potential runners. Last FGM (2015), every single runner that submitted had a run in the marathon!

Please note that we will need A LOT of help, as much as possible. As of now, we have ShadowsDieAway with graphic design and layout update, and Sandsky designing our layouts again! Both of them did fantastic work last year, and we look forward to the quality work they will produce this year. Also, MrSSFireball will be doing a 'highlight reel' at the end of FGM 2016, so we look forward to some hilarious moments during this year's marathon!

So what do we need? If you can re-stream, can design certain aspects of the stream (such as the twitch page!), or help out with any part of the tech, we would love to have you on board the FGM team! Please indicate what you can do on the form itself, thanks!

Also Note: If you would like to submit a "showcase" instead of a speedrun, we would love to hear your ideas! Whether its a new game preview, a skill showcase of some sort, or something completely different, we would love to hear about it! Please use the submission form for any showcase-style runs, and they will be considered! A showcase-style run also includes any event ideas you may have.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

II. Official Date(s)/Time(s)

The official date is set for:

June 10th - June 12th

Starting at:

12:00 PM EDT on June 10th

Ending at:

12:30 PM EDT on June 12th

We are looking for at least 48 hours worth of content this year, as opposed to last year's ~39 hours of content. The times and dates are subject to change as we receive more feedback, and the times will be set in stone once a schedule is verified.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

III. Rules/Layout for FGM for runners and broadcasters

The marathon rules have remained largely unchanged with the exception of a few nuances that we've included in this year's ruleset. Any new rule change is a direct result from feedback regarding FGM 2015.

For runners:

  • When you stream, it will be streamed to either your channel or a RTMP server (TBD)
  • FGM will take that stream and put it onto the main stream page, www.twitch.tv/fangamemarathon
  • Please be ready to stream at your designated time. We ask that runners be available up to 1/2 hour before their scheduled time to allow for any inconsistencies within the schedule
  • When streaming your run, please keep the fangame window in its native resolution. The tech crew is cropping your stream to only include your game feed (and your audio), so please do not stretch or cover any part of the game feed!
  • Webcams are not necessary, but if you do choose to use one, please keep it off of the game feed
  • A timer is not necessary to stream as well, as FGM will time your run for you
  • We encourage runners to commentate their own game while they run it. Runners are allowed to bring in other commentators for their run if they choose to do so, but we ask that these commentators are knowledgeable about the game and the runner. If you choose to keep your run silent, please let the current tech crew know so that FGM may commentate the run instead
  • Please keep the FGM twitch chat open to respond to any questions from either the FGM tech crew or the viewers themselves during your run
  • While we are not taking a hard-line stance towards a PG-rated stream, we ask that you keep your language to a respectable level. While a lot of players in the community tend to curse off some gate jumps, we ask that it stays as PG-13 as possible with no excessive cursing
  • Runners must comply with Twitch's streaming rules for broadcasters at all times. This includes no racism of any kind, even in jest. We ask that runners keep their shirts on this time, even if you have a great 6-pack. Please avoid use of words like "retarded" or "faggot" that may be grounds for offensive content per Twitch's rules.
  • Most importantly, have fun! We love watching our viewers get excited over FGM, and we hope our runners are, too!

For broadcasters:

  • Whether the stream is taken from the runner or a RTMP server, we ask that re-broadcasters are ready at their scheduled time
  • Shifts will be multiple hours long (4-6 most likely, dependent upon # of volunteers)
  • Layouts will include a transition scene, as well as multi-person layouts. The exact layouts will be updated as we receive them, so please make sure you are streaming the right one
  • Fit the game feed(s) and webcam into the appropriate dimensions as indicated on the given layouts
  • Please do not talk over the runner unless absolutely necessary. Please do not mercy kill the current run unless we are drastically behind schedule. If you are forced to do commentary, you are subject to the same rules as the runners for language and appropriateness
  • The re-broadcaster is also in control of the timer, which is also streamed. Please use the correct settings (which will be given) on your timer, and start/stop at the correct times
  • Just like the runners, have fun!

For viewers:

  • FGM 2016 is a super fun event for the community, so get hyped! We love the high energy our viewers bring to the stream!
  • Most of our viewers behaved excellently during the last event, so we look forward to positive behavior this time around! Please remember that just like broadcasters, viewers should refrain from excessive language in the chat, as well as any form of racism, even in jest
  • The marathon will be held at www.twitch.tv/fangamemarathon ... go follow it now!
  • To drum up any hype, we will be hashtagging #FangameMarathon on Twitter! You can join in on the hype as we approach the marathon start date!
  • There will be completely new viewers who most likely know nothing about fangames. We ask that our veteran fangame viewers are respectful towards any "noob" questions or comments they make. We want to include as many as possible!
  • Got a twitch account? Want to type /host fangamemarathon when the marathon starts? Of course you do!
  • Know a big or small streamer that would love to watch FGM with their viewers? Maybe just a personal friend? Tell them all about us! We love some positive press :)

V. Prior FGM (2015) considerations

These are taken straight from the 2015 consideration thread:

Regarding Self-Promotion:

Runners are certainly allowed to promote themselves any way they like. But we ask that you do NOT advertise other channels in any way during a different runner's time slot. Some runners last year felt that a lot of attention was drawn away from them due to spam of other runners' channels. We do not want runners to feel this way, and so we ask that you do not advertise other channels during a run, unless it is for the current runner.

Regarding Time Estimates:

Please try to keep your time as accurate as possible this year! We understand that "going over" time is a little embarrassing, but that is why your time is an 'estimate' for the run! Some of the time estimates last year were way off, and it can really mess up the schedule, so please try to be as accurate as you can! Do not give yourself a 15-minute buffer!

Regarding FrankerFaceZ:

We will be a little more strict with quality-control on any emotes submitted during the marathon. If you would like to submit an emote for the marathon, let us know! We would love to see your ideas before the marathon starts!

Regarding Variety of Games:

We would like to include as many different fangames as possible - do not feel afraid to submit a non-traditional speedrun! If you really like Rainbow Miku and think you can beat it in one go during the marathon, submit it!

Regarding "Memes":

At some points in the FGM 2015 marathon, some users felt that a wall of random emotes is the best way to support the viewer. Walls of emotes are typically never a good way to show your support! Please keep it classy and only spam at appropriate times (ex: JUAN JUAN JUAN during NANG).

Regarding Professional Attitudes:

Already discussed in the ruleset, but we stress that runners stay as professional as possible. Any talk about depression or suicide or family problems is probably not the best topic to talk about during your run. A lot of viewers will look towards the current runner and commentary to gauge how to act, so please keep it mature! We want to have a positive chat, and positive runners! It sets the tone for the rest of our community, especially towards viewers who are brand new.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VI. Donations

This year, we will be attempting to donate money towards a charitable cause. This idea is still being discussed, but the way that we wish to handle it is the following:

  • Establish 1 or 2 main charities that will be donated to
  • Establish any donation incentives or goals, preferably set by runners once this is finalized
  • If given a choice of charity, runners can endorse any charity they wish if they have a preference

Some viewers had talked about this topic last year, and we believe that pooling any money towards a good cause is the best way to represent our community. If you have ideas for charities, please list them below!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's about it! Please use this thread to ask any questions, or to suggest any events, charities, or anything else! This thread, as stated, will be the main "hub" of information pertaining to anything FGM 2016.

Let's make fangames great again.

Tournaments / Fangame Marathon 2016 Dates/Scheduling
« on: April 03, 2016, 03:37:12 PM »
Oh boy, it's that time of year again!

Fangame Marathon 2016 is a go in the near-future! First things first, a date must be decided before really anything else is accomplished.

The tentative date set for FGM 2016 will be June 3rd - 5th, starting at (most likely) 12:00 PM EST.

We would like to know if this date that is currently set works for a majority of potential runners. Please let us know if this date works for you, or if you absolutely cannot do any of the 3 dates listed, along with a suggestion of when you would want it. Note that this thread is NOT for game suggestions, events, or other marathon-related activities. This thread is purely for date discussion only. Another thread will be posted soon regarding official time, events, schedule, and more (megathread).

Edit: Posted below, is June 10th - 12th a good alternative if needed?

Video Games / Rocket League
« on: March 12, 2016, 10:41:17 PM »
Hey everyone!

I have recently taken up Rocket League as an active stream game, and I have seen a lot of interest from some of my regular viewers to play in public matches when I am not playing ranked. In the interest of including as much of our own community as possible, you should comment in here if you play Rocket League (preferably for the PC) and want to play with a group you already know, us!

Our current "active" players that I have had on my stream as of late:
iDragonarion
Kaniciwah
MrSSFireball
ZeroZeo
Miraszek
DistinctMadness
Pieceofcheese
...and more! So definitely drop a comment here if you would like to join in on the action! Some of the members here typically group up even when I'm not the one organizing/streaming the party, so I suppose this thread is more of a general who's-who and getting to join a friendly RL group instead of finding one through Steam.

Wow!
What a Save!

General Discussion / Influx of Twitch Bots
« on: September 30, 2015, 11:24:28 AM »
Hey everyone,

If you're a broadcaster or viewer on Twitch, I'm sure you've noticed by now the large influx of bots that have been spamming every channel non-stop. Until Twitch can figure out a solution (aka update their facka-you-bic-boi database), I'd recommend putting these words into your 'banned words' list:

https://pastebin.com/B4mv787J

This list will hopefully knock out any links in your chat before anyone could click them. The only word I'd recommend taking out of this list is bombch.us, as this is a short URL that circulates primarily in the speedrunning community and nowhere else. This list is not mine, it is a list that someone else had created (and still updates) to help ease the bot spam.

Regarding the * at the beginning/end of each domain name: These asterisks (*) are wildcard characters, which is basically a fill-in-the-blank spot for your ban filter for any character before/after the domain name. This helps against bots that add in a letter before/after the domain name to try to evade the ban filter.

This is not to say that this list will solve all of your problems, but it's a nice barrier to put up to block nasty links, and it gives you time to ban the bot without worry.

I hope this helps!

Tournaments / FGM Wrap-Up/Future Considerations
« on: June 07, 2015, 10:41:57 AM »
Hello fangame community,

First of all, congratulations! This event, by and large, was a huge success! With some bumps in the road, it was clearly a very large success that this community made a reality for 2 straight days. We attracted all sorts of gaming communities to ours - every community from our own to some of the other speedrunning communities, as well as some of the casual communities (like BL2)! We received a lot of new viewers that had no idea what "guy games" are, and chat was fairly responsive to a lot of their questions. Of course, all of our runners seemed very well prepared and ran their games very well (a little too well for your estimates, Kappa). For all of our runners, I'm very proud. You truly showed the "best of the west"!

And now here's a large thank-you list:

Thanks to SandskyZero for initial layout design. They were amazing!
Thanks to ShadowsDieAway for updated layout design, visuals, and VOD creation. You have helped us more than I could imagine!
Thanks to Klazen108 for broadcasting and marathon organization. It is always a pleasure working with you!
Thanks to Wolsk for broadcasting, PR, and CatBags! You really kept our chat entertained!
Thanks to 7thAce for the FGMBot, which I accidentally banned. The bot was great!
Thanks to DanSalvato & SirStendec for live FFZ updates. Thanks a ton!
Thanks to IrelandOfEndor for partnering our marathon stream and giving us quality options, as well as the frontpage! You're awesome!
Thanks to Denferok for Twitter PR about the marathon and adding FGM to the twitch team! #fangamemarathon #thanks
Thanks to Anyone who raided and/or hosted the marathon! You really kept our viewer count high!
Thanks to All of the runners who ran in the marathon. I am very proud of every runner in this marathon, this includes our fillers! #BestOfTheWest
Thanks to The Wannabes for hosting this event. It was really a fun experience.
Thanks to All of our viewers, who stuck with us through sudden frame drops, stops, breaks, and other crazy interruptions!

I encourage you all to thank these individuals for their contributions to the marathon. Without them, this would have never been as big, nor entertaining. Once again, I'm very proud of this community for what has been accomplished. Thank you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To address popular questions floating around:

When is the next FGM? It was so fun!
The next FGM is unannounced. If someone picks up initiative to start another marathon at a later date, I am more than happy to hand over the title of "Fangame Marathon" to them. As of now, there is no date of the next "FGM", but this does not mean there won't be future events!

What about VODs? I missed a few runs!
We have Shadows highlighting runs of the marathon as we speak. This will be a slightly longer process, as some runs are muted and we need to take locally recorded files to upload to youtube in place of them. This will most likely take a week. All runs will be highlighted, don't worry!

Bonus stream? BONUS STREAM?
While there are remnants of the bonus stream still alive on twitch after the marathon, a bonus stream was not initially planned for this marathon. For future events, this is a good topic to bring up when it is time for schedule organizing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that the following topics will most likely spark some debate in our community. Please keep it civil.

Future considerations:

Self-Promotions: To an extent, these are alright! We made sure that broadcasters plugged the stream of the runner before/after every run, as well as letting the runner talk about any other social media site to follow them on. This marathon was to encourage viewers to your channel, and more importantly, the community. While this was received well, there was lots of small talk about some streamers going overboard with advertising. While we condone advertising during your own run, we do NOT condone advertising for other channels during others' runs. This was a common problem, and happened after almost every run. This was seen as extremely disrespectful to the current runner, and the community itself. For future events, keeping self-promotions to the runner only in emote and/or text form is necessary.

Time Estimates: Obviously an issue during FGM. While some runners were within 5/10 minutes of their estimate, some runners went waaaaayyyyy under estimate and put us in a bad spot for finding "filler" content until the next run. There was a few accusations of runners abusing the time estimate for self-promotion purposes. If this is the case, we will not accept this in future events. While fangames are tricky to find an accurate time estimate for, more time and effort needs to be given to runners' submissions before giving a time estimate. Keep this in mind for future events.

FrankerFaceZ: Another issue during FGM. Some emotes were added without approval, and some emotes were seen as not directly related to FGM. Another minor issue that came up was that mobile users cannot see FFZ, so it makes the chat a mess for them. In the future, FFZ must be used sparingly and must be directly related to the event at-hand.

Variety of games: A slightly minor issue in FGM, but a good topic to discuss. Some viewers had pointed out a lack of avoidance, while there was heavy emphasis on needle games. While this is true, this ultimately ended up as a scheduling/submission issue. For future events, I encourage the organizers of the event to promote all game types, and to spread them out evenly in the event.

"Memes": Some viewers and runners felt that at times, the FGM chat had promoted an overabundance of spam, memes, etc. While single emotes and text are ok for spam (example: JUAN JUAN JUAN during the NANG run), copypasta and walls of text/emotes are not ok. This hurts the chat more than you could imagine, especially for new viewers. For the future, mods of the chat should be instructed to take down any copypasta and walls of text/emotes. Of course, we will encourage single-emote and small-text spam during fun moments in runs!

Professional Attitudes: During some points in the marathon, some runners had exhibited some unprofessional behaviors. Whether accidental or on purpose, we simply cannot represent our community with a childish attitude, as our runners are a direct reflection of our community. Following Twitch's rules about dress code, camera positions, and behavior towards other runners and chat during the run needs to be respectful and adhered to. For future events, please keep these in mind.

Remember to keep all discussion about these topics civil. I do not condone any names being directly tied to any of the considerations. Your comment will be edited to not include names. I encourage discussion to the fullest extent so we can make the next event even better! Please let us know what you thought of the marathon below, and what you liked/disliked!

Thanks again, fangame community. You made us look great!

Tournaments / FGM Mega Thread [Info, Schedule, Everything]
« on: May 18, 2015, 02:36:58 PM »
Hello everyone!

With the approach of Fangame Marathon, we need one mega thread to combine all the info into one centralized and convenient source. This thread will include info regarding just about everything related to FGM.

Info for Runners

Congrats on having a game to run during the marathon! We hope that you have practiced/are practicing your chosen game(s) for the upcoming marathon! Here's a few rules that we have set out for the runners during FGM:

-When you stream, you are streaming from YOUR channel. (Example: Cdmans is running Churatch, so he will stream Churatch from his own twitch.tv page)
-FGM will then take your stream and re-stream it to our centralized marathon page, www.twitch.tv/fangamemarathon
-Please be ready to stream and begin to stream slightly before your time has come for your run/race. We want this to flow smoothly!
-When you stream, please keep the game in its native 800x600 (or 800x608) resolution on your stream. This means no stretching out vertically/horizontally. You are allowed to re-size the game to fit the size of your stream, however, DO NOT STRETCH.
-If you choose to stream with a facecam, please keep the facecam OFF OF THE GAME FEED. We will have a separate spot that we will put your facecam in, so we need it to be off of the game completely. This applies to both races and solo runs.
-If you choose to stream with no facecam, this is perfectly acceptable. We will have a placeholder/different layout set for no facecams. This applies to both races and solo runs.
-If you choose to stream with a timer, please keep the timer OFF OF THE GAME FEED. This is entirely optional and will not be captured/restreamed on the main marathon page. We will be running our own single-segment timer. We feel that not seeing a timer will help runners relax, but you are certainly allowed to keep it on your own stream off of the game feed.
-You are allowed to commentate your own game, or bring along your friends to commentate. Good voice communication programs to assist runners would be Ventrilo, Teamspeak, Skype, etc. The Wannabes Teamspeak server is available to everyone, and the runner is allowed to use anyone they like to help them cast their game. If you choose to not cast your game and play silently, the re-broadcasters will commentate and provide input. We ask that the runner, runner's friends, or re-broadcasters please refrain fromexcessive language and/or attacking any particular aspect of the game, game creator, or viewers. We want to set a good precedent for future events.
-Please keep the FGM chat open so the re-broadcaster can tell you when they're ready. They will automatically start the timer when you begin your game! (Also, please yell TIME when you are finished)
-If you are running in the marathon but your time hasn't come yet, please /host fangamemarathon in your own channel until your time is ready. This keeps everyone focused on one source.
-Most importantly, have fun! This is not meant to be a super serious event, rather, one that brings the community together to celebrate our achievements.

Info for Re-Broadcasters

-Confirmed re-broadcasters for the FGM are Klazen108 and myself. We're looking for broadcasters.
-Shifts will most likely be around 8 hours at a time. This is a near-40 hour marathon, so around 5 shifts total.
-Layout design will be given to each re-broadcaster. They are being designed by sandsky, and look fantastic. Thanks, sandsky!
-The layouts will include 1 person, 2 person, 3 person, and 4 person layouts. Font styles for timer/text will also be given.
-We will be streaming in a 16:9 format, most likely 1280x720 to match the layout design at 1500 bitrate. (I will PM klazen/other broadcasters on all the specifics so our streams are similar)
-A "switching runners" screen(s) will also be used, they are being designed by Arclooper. Thanks, arc! These will also be handed out very soon.
-To re-stream each part, pop-out the runner's stream and sub-window capture their game and/or facecam. If there is no facecam, images will be given to fill in the facecam space.
-Fit the game and/or facecam to the appropriate dimensions. Once this is set, let the runner know you are good to go via the FGM chat and/or their stream chat.
-You will start the timer when they begin their game, end the timer when the game has been completed.
-If the game is over estimate, please POLITELY remind the runner that we are going over estimate soon. If the game runs 15-20 minutes over estimate, please mercy kill the run. Lol.
-Just like the runners, have fun!

Info for viewers (and everyone, really)

-Fangame Marathon, once again, will be held on June 5th, starting roughly around 12:00 PM EST until June 7th at roughly 2 AM EST. There may be some setting up prior to this time.
-The marathon will be held at www.twitch.tv/fangamemarathon. Go follow it now!
-As the time nears, we hope that you get excited for 39 hours of non-stop fan games. Please be mindful that there will be roughly 5 minutes between each game to set up games, and 10 minutes between broadcasters every 8 hours.
-To drum up hype, we'll be hash-tagging #FangameMarathon on twitter. Any support is appreciated!
-We ask that viewers are respectful in chat to both the runner and to other viewers. We want our community to shine! There will most likely be "new" viewers that have never watched a fangame before. Please do not berate anyone who asks a "noob" question or comment about fangames. (Example: Omg k3 is hardest fangame l0l0l0l0l XDXDXDXD)
-You can also help advertise the channel on twitch by /host fangamemarathon in your own twitch.tv channel to host it! Hosts are good publicity, as it directs anyone followed to you towards our channel for the marathon.

Other info about the marathon

-Here are example images of the layout we will be using, subject to minor changes: 1 person: https://i.imgur.com/b1hI4dZ.png , 2 person: https://i.imgur.com/WFaGQhj.png , 3 person: https://i.imgur.com/fMDC46f.png , 4 person: https://i.imgur.com/gfMjIFN.png
-We, Fangame Marathon, claim no responsibility for any offensive language and/or graphics that are expressed and/or displayed during any fangame, by any participant, at any time.
-The master schedule can be found here: httpss://horaro.org/fangamemarathon/schedule
-There will be memes. Lots. of. memes. Bring your Grade-A copypastas! Because of the way twitch has re-designed the way their chat posts messages, ASCII typically does not post well. We ask that you refrain from ASCII art (sorry, toucans).

Regarding "donations"

-We have decided that, to avoid the hassle of donating and finding one that a majority agrees upon, Fangame Marathon is NOT hosting any charity/organization. However, this does not mean that runners cannot participate in fundraising for any cause.
-To runners: If you decide to set up donations for whatever cause, please let me and/or klazen know about this beforehand. You are allowed to accept donations from this marathon at any time. The donation button is to be hosted on your own channel for your own cause. Whether this is for a charity or for raising SGDQ/ESA travel money is up to you. You are allowed to plug for your own donation button during your run and your run only, races included. We are not accepting "advertisements" for a donation when it is not during your run.
-If you choose to go with a donation button, we will be sure to point viewers towards your channel if they wish to donate. We ask that you be polite and respectful of all donation amounts. If you are reading donation comments, please filter any obscene/inappropriate comments from being read.
-If you choose to not go with a donation button, there's no instructions in this entire section that you need to read. I should've typed this first, hue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TL;DR

-Runners, be on time and be respectful.
-Broadcasters, I'm preparing all the materials for you ASAP, and will run down further instructions as time nears.
-Viewers, have fun! You represent our community, so please be respectful and accepting of new viewers!
-Individual donations can be made to runners directly from their channel, not from Fangame Marathon's.
-Master schedule here: httpss://horaro.org/fangamemarathon/schedule
-Tons of memes

Let's make this a great event, I wanna community!

Tournaments / The FGM Schedule!
« on: May 04, 2015, 11:14:57 PM »
Hello everyone!

After 6+ painstaking hours of organizing, editing, deleting, and adding runners and times, we finally have the first revision of our schedule!

For those that don't know, FGM is Fangame Marathon, an event that will be held June 5th-6th, slightly bleeding over into the early hours of the 7th. It starts Friday at 12:00 PM EST.

For those that can't read and asked me 9,000 times over Skype:

JUNE 5TH TO JUNE 6TH, starting 12 PM EST

Here is a link to the schedule for your viewing pleasure. All times are in EST (Eastern Standard Time), please convert it to your local time zone for a better understanding. I made sure to stay within EVERYONE's time availability. Seriously.

httpss://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19KUHOX1-J75F5XlIlawb8mA-NGJu8H6NO6dpRuafjHI/edit?usp=sharing

If you are a runner and you see a time that is completely 100% not possible, CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY. You can PM me on twitch, Skype, or respond here. Please note that it will be very hard for us to make changes past this point. Also, if you see that one of your runs didn't make it, we're sorry. We truly tried to accommodate everyone's schedules, and some runs had to be bumped. We apologize if one of your runs was bumped. Many runners have had to do this.

If you are a viewer, save the date! This is some of the best talent this community has to offer in 39 non-stop hours of mind-blowing guy game speedruns. Everything from needle games to medley games, we have you covered! With races sprinkled in, great speedruns, and a few surprises(!), we're sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Hopefully not for all 39 hours.

We are STILL LOOKING FOR HELPERS. If you can re-stream, design visuals (banners, layouts), and promote the FGM, please contact me!

More info regarding the official FGM channel will be posted soon.

Enjoy!

Tournaments / FGM Setup
« on: April 19, 2015, 10:48:30 AM »
Hello everyone!

It's been a while since our last update. I believe submissions for FGM have stayed open long enough, as I have started to assign games to specific runners that signed up. It's a work-in-progress, baby!

There's a few main topics I want to review with the community as we take our next steps to making this become a reality:

The Date(s):

June 5th to June 7th. Exact start/end times are still TBD.

How it will run:

The FGM (Fangame Marathon) will highlight a variety of runners speeding through various fangames in a timely manner. Although some runners will get multiple games to run, the more-than-likely scenario will be that the same runner will run 2 games, back-to-back, before handing it over to the next runner. This 2-block window will run anywhere between 1-2 hours. For games that are much longer in time (see: Cultured, Rekt, Kamilia 2/3), only 1 game will be run. Every game/race will have an estimate.

The FGM will not only feature individual runs of games, but races as well! Races will most likely be placed in the late afternoon/evening EST time, which should complement everyone's schedule hopefully. There will also be various "bonus" events throughout the marathon, including a "Draw my guy" artistic contest and a special presentation by ... TASbot? Klazen? It's a mystery.

The FGM will be hosted by some cameraman, who will pop-out the runner's stream and re-stream it to the FGM channel. The runner's name and twitch page should be clearly visible to all viewers on the FGM channel. For races, multiple pop-outs will be used. This way, the runner can comfortably stream on their own channel w/o worrying about setup/size/quality. We ask, however, that all runners have a "decent" quality to their stream, especially runners that are running games that have a lot of things going on in one screen (see: Weston).

Scheduling:

The schedule will (hopefully) be prepared soon. This will be a ROUGH copy of the master FGM schedule. I will attempt to contact every runner to verify their time. If a time does not work out, we will attempt to reschedule to the best of our ability. I apologize in advance for scheduling conflicts!

The FGM Channel/Setup:

The FGM channel will be setup soon. We are currently looking for anyone who can create overlays / banners / stream info pictures / etc for the FGM channel and broadcaster/cameraman. We desperately need these. If you are seriously interested in making any of these, please contact me either here or on twitch @ www.twitch.tv/tehjman1993 (send me a PM!). I'm also fairly active on the #wannabes IRC under the SRL channel.

The FGM broadcaster/cameraman:

We are currently looking for anyone who can volunteer hour(s) of their time to broadcast runners. You must have a strong computer/internet to do this, as some games/races will require good quality and multiple streams.

Donations:

Currently, I have no set plan if we are contributing to a cause. This is a very secondary concern at the moment. If anyone can set up/manage a place to donate to for a cause, please let me know. I know that the GDQ's typically donate to medical-related causes, but I'm not exactly sure how they have it set up. If anyone is seriously interested in making that happen, please contact me. Otherwise, this will probably not happen. Of course, we would always encourage anyone who enjoys watching the current runner/racer to visit their twitch.tv channel to personally donate and/or sub to them. That we could do.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

If there is anything I forgot to cover in this post that you still have questions about, please post here! The more volunteers I can get, the faster this process will move.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. If anyone wants to help me set up scheduling, that'd be nice :)

Super edit: Because it has been asked before, I am making all submissions public to FGM. This is the RESPONSES ONLY spreadsheet, and will not reflect the master schedule very well: httpss://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jY6KUguHvDPiIH6WBD6QW2l8bI1z0eK8J4UuRwGTgv8/edit?usp=sharing

Hello everyone,

As always, the fangame community is branching out in multiple ways to create a larger community, and a more informed one at that! With that being said, Jumpyluff had the great idea of adding fangames to speedrun.com, with the approval of pac!

What does this mean for me?

It doesn't mean much directly, however, this puts all of the fangame speedrun times in one place, and a centralized source to boot. Speedrun.com seems to be an up-and-coming site for all speedrun times, regardless of game/platform. Adding fangames to this mix will only strengthen our communication with knowing our own community, and others!

You can find all the fangames Jumpyluff and I have added so far here: www.speedrun.com/iwbtgfg

Of course, you've probably noticed that there is a large number of fangames missing. We're working on it! This is a huge work-in-progress, but will hopefully yield great results. Although I do not want to discount Denferok's list, I believe that submitting times here AND on Den's list would be fantastic.

The main purpose of this thread is to not only inform you of this addition, but to ask you: WHAT ARE WE MISSING? Did we mess up your time on a game that's there? Is your time simply not there? Did we forget a game that you ran and would like a leaderboard for? Did we forget a category? Did we forget to link a video on your name? etc. etc. Let us know here, or on twitch at twitch.tv/tehjman1993 or twitch.tv/jumpyluff. We won't take offense, I promise.

The cool thing about speedrun.com is that if you currently don't have an account, but decide to make one, all of your times that have the same name will be auto-connected to your account. If for whatever reason you make an account but you spelled it differently than how we have it on the leaderboards, let us know here.

Enjoy guys!

-TJ & Jumpyluff

Tournaments / The FGM Runner Submission Thread
« on: March 15, 2015, 10:52:43 AM »
Hello everyone!

We're slowly taking our baby steps towards making Fan Game Marathon (FGM) a reality! We have your list of games all packed up and ready to go, but now the real question is - who will run them?

If you would like to participate in FGM, please fill out this form: https://goo.gl/forms/9Sf6kVfnGN

Your response will be recorded on a velvet pillow and beak-delivered to me by the rarest and most prestigious toucans in the world. Then I have to organize it all ;;

This form will stay open for a while. I will try to match your top priority games to you as much as possible. I will prioritize faster times by default. Please do not try to "fake" your estimated time for a specific game, as I'll be looking at twitch profiles for previous times. Please, for the sake of simplicity, only list games that you are comfortable running.

Q/A:

What dates are FGM?

TBD

Who is running [insert fangame here]?

TBD

Who is casting?

TBD

Where can I donate to the Prevent Savehacker Foundation?

httpss://www.twitchalerts.com/donate/tehjman1993 :Kappa:

What if I don't want to run FGM but want to watch it?

That's fine! Just sit tight for a few monthsyears until it's all ready!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have any questions about THIS process of selecting runners/races, this is the place to do so. I am always looking for volunteers as well, as organizing runners to games is going to drive me crazy.

Go Wannabes go ( ◕  ᗜ  ◕ ) !

Tournaments / The FGM Suggestion Thread
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:05:31 PM »
Hello everyone,

Ever thought of a giant fangaming marathon? Of course you have, don't be silly. But what if this became a reality? What if we had one stream where 10's (maybe 100's Kappa) of runners can play though their favorite fan games as quickly as possible, back-to-back! It would be our own marathon that's open to all skill levels, all fangames, and more importantly, ANYONE to watch! I think this would open our community up to players who are "afraid" to play fangames, as well as expose what we're all about - playing guy games.

This is where we had the great idea of FGM - Fan Games Marathon. Although we have nothing set in stone yet, this purpose of this thread is to suggest fangames you would love to see run at a marathon, either to play or to watch. Keep the ENTIRE community in mind - "pros" and "noobs" alike!

I'll start us off with a few easy ones that I think would be easy to commentate and are enjoyable to watch:

I wanna be the Dark Blue
I wanna be the GReeeeeN
I wanna Kill the Kamilia 2
I wanna be the Boshy
I wanna Get Cultured
I wanna Get Rekt (no bias Kappa)
I wanna get the Yellow Star
I wanna beat the Random Numbers

...and so on. List your list here! I just want to clarify that this is not a "real" event yet, as this is merely just an idea that was floating around. If we can pick up speed for this idea, we can turn it into a reality. Let's do it!

Edit: Here is a tenative list that pieceofcheese set us up:
httpss://docs.google.com/document/d/1YWCeOleHzE8FYncW6NC9UNd26vycezJUNuPhCHVh030/edit

Please don't troll this list ;;

Edit2: Renamed marathon from FGDQ to FGM for legal reasons.

Video Discussion / Boshy Platforming Tutorial Series
« on: February 14, 2015, 06:02:23 PM »
Hello all,

Over the past few weeks I've worked on a series of 11 videos, 1 for each world, in I wanna be the Boshy. In each video I explain the basic platforming behind the game, and throw in various speedrunning tricks to help both casual players and new speedrunners alike. The goal is to help out anyone who plays Boshy, but more importantly encourages potential speedrunners to give Boshy more interest. Boshy is a frightfully intimidating game, and hopefully this series will help out all new players.

You can find all 11 videos in one convenient playlist, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfsbqHcKzIR9preBznujiJF2XGSqsmkdN
Enjoy!
