For now, it seems it only affects archived streams, and not live broadcasts. I've had some of my highlights muted because I had music playing in the background (using NightBot's AutoDJ). Have there been any cases where it did this for actual in-game music yet?

Edit

Apparently, the muting is done /client-side/. So one could download highlights and broadcasts using NightDev's TwitchDown or the Livestreamer utility to pipe it to VLC. It could be possible that someone could develop an extension to unmute Twitch.

Twitch is stupid for following copyright law and not risking getting sued? ok, makes total sense.

Its surprising it wasn't like this for so long, I mean, look at how long its been like this on youtube.

its not fair to blame them for this.
Just pretend I have a cool picture like Zero.

Avoidance fights are often flagged for copyright on youtube, but can be acknowledged.   On twitch they will be muted.   If you highlight a muted  section for youtube uploading does it mute it on youtube as well?  If so, that's going to be very annoying to those in the community who are more into avoidance.

I also have to mention this, and knowing you paragus you love playing your own music on stream, i saw that your whole hearthstone stream from last night i think, was completely muted.

From what I've heard you'll still have the audio on youtube. The twitchplayer simply mutes the sound, it's not getting rid of the audio entirely. There even was a bug (don't know if this still works) where you could press your spacebar twice during a muted part, and the sound would come back.

It's stupid even if there ARE workarounds.  As far as I know, no one is making money off the viewcount of VODs, so being worried about being sued is kinda dumb.  I was looking forward to Google taking over in hopes that they would make things way better despite the inevitable Google+ integration because they have so much money.  Lotsa people are mad about this audio thing and are already migrating to Hitbox (which I'll do if Google actually does ruin Twitch), but right now I guess I'll deal with it.  It's gonna make exporting from Twitch a pain, though.

Danny Baranowsky, whose music is best know for Super Meat Boy and now Crypt of the Necrodancer, is having his music blocked by the new system.   The irony is that he wants his music to be heard and never filed to have it protected by copyright.

A silly little highlight I made about the first boss in Crimson was muted. Any VOD featuring the ED of Kamilia 2 will need to exclude the ED, which means it will exclude the player's reactions to beating the game the first time or setting a new PB. It's probably going to affect us a lot more often than we think. Audible Magic's music database is extensive.

There aren't really any laws in particular that Twitch is complying with here. Youtube implemented this system voluntarily in an effort to cut down on the mountain of copyright claims it receives. Implementing the same system on Twitch reads as Google blindly applying the same set of rules of policies to a completely different context and environment where they won't actually accomplish anything. I really can't imagine that Twitch was receiving very many copyright claims on the basis of VOD content.

If the streamer screams/talks during the ending part, there will be no way it can detect the music.

I barely get Boshy stuff flagged because of all the other stuff going on (Shooting, saving, reloading, dying, and so on and so forth) even though it is packed to the max with copyrighted music. On top of that it is only VoDs.

People that care about having their reactions on the video should start recording locally and then upload it to YouTube, as YT does not seem to care about Video Game music as much.

When I see this, I think back to the cop lecturing the boys in South Park about the cost of illegally downloading music. Surely Twitch doesn't want to condemn these struggling artists to a life of semi-luxury  :Kappa:

I also refer you to the 2:20 mark of Weird Al's song:
Don't forget your daily Solgryn! ^o^
