Title: Work In Progress (and Discontinued) Screenshot Thread
Post by: patrickgh3 on January 12, 2015, 11:37:16 PM
Hi all. I figured it would be nice to have a thread where we share work in progress screenshots and thoughts of the cool projects we are working on, and you also don't want to start a new thread just for it. I know I'm often curious what people are cooking up! I think posts about discontinued projects should also be welcome here, since others can draw inspiration from them and also learn from their shortcomings, postmortem style. I think sharing these WIP and discontinued project screenshots is a great thing for our community to do. :)

I'll start with my first (recent, not including back in 2010) attempt at a fangame: I Wanna Dream of 100, from a little over 1 year ago. I thought a 100 floor game with calm and dreamy environments and original (albeit crappy) art would be fun to play and to make. I soon found out that 100 floors is a *lot* of content, and that I wasn't as comfortable with fangame level design yet as I thought, so I dropped it. I do like a lot of the ideas it has though, and I just might come back to it. I later thought of ideas for a final stage and boss, and a neat gimmick that would play nice with the whole game: an optional collectible item in every room, which is only visible when you are near it so you have to hunt for it, and more challenging to get to than the hardest platforming in the main path, so the game appeals to both beginner and intermediate players.

I'm looking forward to what everyone has to share! :)

(Mods, feel free to spoiler these pictures if need be. I'm not sure what's appropriate. Thanks.)

I'm working on a one-screen game, and I had made a bunch of individual save segments in RMJ, but had yet to fit and connect them all together into one screen. After having trouble doing it in my head, I decided to just draw out all the segments on graph paper, cut each one out, and physically rearrange them. It turned out to be effective! It was also pretty fun, and I was very entertained by the concept, so I figured I would share. :)

This was my original idea for I wanna play an adventure game:

(click to show/hide)

Some spikes I made for it:

An idea for the first boss and after beating him I was thinking u could go over the cave instead of in for a secret or something, that's why the danger sign is there:

(click to show/hide)

making art for this game turned out to be too time consuming, so I decided to tone it waaaay back and go simple for my first game.  At some point I might revisit this, but at the moment I am getting close to finishing a another fangame.
here's a screenshot from stage 1 of the new unfinished game I am working on atm:

I like the idea of this thread  :atkHappy:

Working from time to time on my third boss for "I wanna be the Tower".

It has some kind of ikaruga gimmick. This is the attack I created 2 days ago:

Just an example here, I can't really figure out what I want to do with the lighting.

Also Studio sucks compared to previous versions IMO. At least for making platformers. I just only have a license for studio :/

Up to my usual nonsense with the GMstudio engine. This is just the title screen and the second screen of the game, but I'm enjoying making something again.

Yes, everyone should be elated. I'm probably going to keep working on it till GMstudio goes on sale so I can get rid of the loading screen and title bar nonsense.

I started work on my first "proper" fangame a while ago, and as of right now it's about a quarter-done. It's going to be a 100-floor platforming-only game. I also thought that instead of difficulties altering saves, they would alter spike quantities. Yes, I know it's not much more creative, but it's something.

It's not too good, imo... but I'm getting used to fangame design philosophies!

I'm making a metroidvania type thing in java. There will be a light needle main hub with secrets and stuff to explore and stages with different gimmicks, from which you will get items and abilities. Right now I'm mainly working on the graphics. I just got lighting working, so next I'll work on shadows, then the rooms/stages and less shitty sprites (I can't draw for shit).

New game? New game!

Still fiddling with the tileset to not get tangents that are disjointed by a single pixel, but it looks fine if you don't look too close (and don't take incredibly low-quality screenshots.) I also have no idea if half of this is possible right now.

(https://i1365.photobucket.com/albums/r749/NoCompanyNeeded/32x32everywhere_zpsis7jnqwo.jpg)

I still haven't decided if it's going to be an all jump refresher affair again or not, and I probably won't finish it either way.

How do you deal with things that don't fit onto the 32x32 grid with that setup?

Also, have a title screen everyone:

Kinda feel like this thread should be in the Game Design forum but maybe that's just me.

They're spawned after the array has created the basic room and they're saved in a different more boring way.

I like the title screen so far, SCP entry in the back? + I feel you on that front, all the little things like titles, naming levels and menu screens are what I tend to enjoy designing most. Then the graphics, then the coding then the levels, in descending order.
Title: Re: Work In Progress (and Discontinued) Screenshot Thread
Post by: Kyir on July 12, 2015, 06:41:12 PM
I wrote it, but I could probably write decent SCP entries too (or would if I didn't keep noticing typos in the background.) I'm going for a more atmospheric storytelling approach this time instead of dialogue like I did in my last game.

Pretty tricky room, took about 200 deaths to beat. But I've to test it on my brothers computer before I decide to nerf it because this notebook keyboard is incredibly bad, even more now that the left shift doesn't work at all.
That's the 4th screen of the 4th stage out of 6. You can play them in any order as they're all in the hub since the start, but before entering them there's a difficulty rating which should show the intended difficulty curve.

I Wanna Be The Mirror :

Yes I'm still working in this metroidvania styled game which I started several years ago. I'm currently redesigning this area because as you can see there's a health bar, but since a great part of the game revolved around 1 hit kill objects, for the most part it was really irrelevant. Been doing a lot of redesign work over the Mario area and I hope I can something done soon.

Yeah, it's possible to force people to do jumps in really awkward ways with them. I'm also happy with how the graphic came out in terms of readability vs. jump refreshers.

How'd you get that effect? I'm really curious.

I would assume you linked the player's X coordinate to the alpha value of a layer, but that would mean that if they went backwards the effect would reverse? It's really neat though.

Pretty much. Each portal object has a destination portal and a direction. The portal will render whatever is inside the destination portal (minus the portal itself) to a framebuffer (which I guess is analogous to a surface in game maker), then render that to the area it takes up. The alpha for a right-side portal depends on how close the player is to the right side, and same thing for a left-side one. It teleports you to the destination portal when you're in the center, so you have to mess with the alpha values to keep it from "jumping" when you have a transition between a dark and light scene like that.

The portals take up the entire screen and fade out to the left or right, so they kind of conveniently match up with a bit of tweaking.

That's pretty clever. I think a lot of people who play these games don't realize how much effort it can take to make a few seconds of content sometimes.

It's da first room of the gaym. I'll reduce the amount of corners unlike another really obscure fangame and try to make a reasonable game for the first time and it'll actually have a difficulty curve.
Also forgot to mention that you can fly.

Post by: patrickgh3 on August 12, 2015, 05:42:43 PM
So, for the past few months, a group of fangame creators and I have been making mini platforming stages and bosses through a process where we finish each other's work. I've been compiling the results into one huge game, and it's finally getting close to being done. ETA is probably a month or less, so get ready! The first picture is of the hub area, and the second is of one of the stages.

Forgot to remove those Under-Construction blocks. They were meant to block off areas that haven't been implemented yet. More screenshots of my easy fangame, and trust me the level design gets far worse from there:

Save File Select
(click to show/hide)
Vs. Totally Not Ryu
(click to show/hide)
See, I told you that the level design gets worse! Those enemies were taken from an old Game Maker Game.
(click to show/hide)
Item get!
(click to show/hide)
Testing screen and controls!
(click to show/hide)

You can treat it like a toned down version of Boshy if you'd like. I might include other fangame characters (with unique colors from each other) by request, as long as they aren't edits of The Kid. The only sprites required are for standing, walking and being airborne.

Just a word of advice from someone who has spent a long time making a lot of different things: if you aren't positive about your own work, no one else will be probably. Everything's going to be flawed in some way, but focus on the positives.
Title: Re: Work In Progress (and Discontinued) Screenshot Thread
Post by: Keygrin on November 29, 2015, 10:33:51 PM
Game was meant for faint of heart. It has little to no challenge and it's not interesting. One of the main reasons I'm even creating it is for the mundane fact that it has "I wanna" in its title, and stars The Kid. *snicker*

So, I was thinking that since it's not yet filled with enough needle bullshit, maybe 3 needle towers, all of which contain an item and up to 15 floors followed by a boss fight at the end. 1st tower ought to start off really basic and get increasingly a tiny bit more hectic.

I'm still debating between a few different versions of the money ring. To be honest though, I'm reaching the point where I don't get a whole lot of enjoyment from the actual gameplay design of any aspects of fangames. Graphics/audio is so much more fun.

ds_list_add(OppDeckList1, 2, 5, 8, 12, 15);
ds_list_shuffle(OppDeckList1);

Step Event:
If objGameBoard.OppTurn = true {
    var = ds_list_find_value(OppDeckList1, 0);
    objGameBoard.CurrentCard = global.CardDeck[var];
    ds_list_delete(OppDeckList1, 0);
    objGameBoard.OppTurn = false}

I'm sure guessing what it is will be real challenge for everyone.

definitely some kind of card game :p
you create the opponent's deck and add a few cards. then in the step event you check whether it's the computer's turn, and if it is, you "draw" a card, remove it from the deck (of course) and end the turn.

i just can't guess what game it is from the values involved :p

Yeah! That's what all the code there does. I'm still struggling with figuring out how to make Game Maker hold onto values while I'm switching around active objects but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

That, or I'll give up on it completely.

That said, if anyone's interested in helping me recreate what's basically a dumbed-down version of Tetra Master from FF9, send me a message somewhere.

We who made I wanna try a Collab (https://delicious-fruit.com/ratings/game_details.php?id=15369), along with some new people, have been doing more mini-collabs for a sequel. It won't be finished anytime soon, but we've been making some platforming, needle, boss, and meme stages.

Here's one nice-looking needle screen we made. In this one Ario147 picked music, then Pieceofcheese87 made graphics (very nice ones), and then I did level design.

Why title cards?
It looks nice to me and basically, telling people where they are in the game even not very specific
at least, those things weren't 'k3 copy' too much

Great idea for a thread! Why not, I'll give it a go! This is an area in my game that's taken after some type of snowy plains... I'm super excited to get this finished and I've been having so much fun making this game from scratch!

Here's a sneak peek!

Persistant blood with surfaces and shaders!
(httpss://i.imgur.com/EjOy7qc.gif)
It doesn't lag, and it's pixel-perfect- note how the spike on the right gets colored by the blood, but doesn't have anything clumped around the edges. Pixologists can paint the town red without obscuring their jumps!

Making your own resources? In fangames? Unacceptable.

Looking good despite the unacceptableness though.

That room looks fun. I hope you don't get too down comparing your work to others' work. I try to remember that everyone is on a different level of experience and has different strengths and weaknesses, so I don't unfairly compare myself to others and I can take inspiration from people who are better than me, e.g. "one day maybe I could do that."

A good thing to remember is that while we're all making games at the same time, it isn't the same time in our respective careers of creating things. I know a few people whose first real creative endeavor was making a fangame, which would inherently be of a different quality compared to someone who has been making things for years and years. It may seem like other people are far ahead of you now, but once your experiences are more comparable your output likely will be too.
