Title: Most fangames won't start
Post by: shimaeis on February 05, 2014, 10:26:12 PM
Hi,
is there a known issue regarding compatibility of fangames? I couldn't find any help elsewhere.
Here's the problem: Almost all fangames I downloaded won't start up/crash right after starting up. The only exceptions are: I wanna be the boshy and I wanna be the hero again which both run without problems. And I wanna be the Saturn, which crashes as soon as I select a difficulty.

I'm pretty sure the problem is on my end, because I downloaded more than 20 random games (from here (https://www21.atwiki.jp/iwannabethewiki/pages/283.html) and here2 (httpss://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ai5kGaEf_4pidE5NNklnR2VPMUZEbklDeGNldnRGQmc&usp=sharing#gid=6)) and they all show the same behaviour (crashing right after start).

I had that problem too but i just had to remove all error.txt in the same folder.

Thanks for the response, but that doesn't work. There are no error.txt in the folders where the game .exe's are (you meant those folders didn't you?). If you meant the "readme" .txt with mangled characters (from the japanese games), deleting them won't solve the issue.

I downloaded a couple more and found that I wanna kill the kamilia 2 also runs without problems. Right now, every game that crashes displays the game maker logo at the start and every game that works doesn't. Is there some software required to run games made with game maker? I have absolutely no experience with that, sorry.

are you storing the EXE's in seperate folders from each other? if not that causes issues. if they are giving you error messages then maybe post a screenshot or something here. also try running in windows 98 compatability and as administrator. I know this helps churatch but I dunno about more.

Thank you very much! Compatibility mode did the trick. I don't know why though, I tried the games on my brothers PC with the same OS and everything just worked...

There was no error message, the programm just didn't respond and I had to close it with task manager. And I store the games so that each game is in its own folder.

But now all games work, so this is resolved, thanks again.
