Game size super huge
« on: October 01, 2013, 09:32:33 PM »
Hey guys,

I got a problem with my project. I had an issue with a ressource pack for GameMaker 8.1 which is not longer supported by the creator. He switched to Gamemaker Studio and released his ressource pack there. Because of this, I imported my Project to Gamemaker studio. During the Import, Studio changed a lot of files. Afterwards I realized that it's not worth it to switch to studio because there were so many virtual machine errors, so I switched back to 8.1.

But suddenly my game is 73 MB big, instead of 30-35. Is there a possibility to get back to the "original" size of the game?

Thanks in advance!

Did you just revert to your old .gmk file, when you realized GM Studio wasn't worth it? Or did you port it to GMStudio, and then port the GM Studio project back to Game Maker 8.1?

In the case of the latter, Game Maker Studio just generally uses more space for resources, such as images or sound, since it has to be able to go cross-platform. By taking a Game Maker Studio file, and reverting it to Game Maker 8.1, you inadvertently port the larger files, resulting in a larger file size. If this is the case, the only ways you can get it back to it's original state, is if you have a backup (.gb1 / .gmk), or if you re-import all your resources from their original sources.

Depending on how much work it is, I think this is one of those things he's gonna put off for about 3 months, then scrap the idea of doing it and deal with it.

100mb isn't too much, compared to other games. You can ride it off, and say it's a "feature", or "that's just how much work I've put into it".

Hey, sorry was really busy the last days  :BibleThump:

It didn't work. I imported some of the images and songs again cause I thought maybe Studio has converted them to some shit, but still the Game size is still huge. I gave zero the gmk, but I dont know if he found a way to fix it.

Well, I've been searching the web for a solution. It turns out that I was wrong about game maker studio making its resources like images larger. None the less, game maker studio files just are larger, and it doesn't seem like there is anything to be done about it.

If you want a more indepth reason as to why they take up more space, I found this article that explains it pretty well:
https://yal.cc/gamemaker-studio-compacting-project-files/

But as I stated earlier, 100mb isn't that much compared to other games.
If you see it from Solgryns point of view, your 25mb away from making the next Boshy :Kappa:
