On one hand, I'm impressed with the level of technical skill it probably took to make this and I'm curious to see if the ease of importing to engines encourages anyone new to get into game making. On the other, I can't help but feel like this is just going to end up with us all sinking deeper into needle hell.

It will be neat to see either way I guess!

Thanks for making this Patrick! <3

I really don't know if you're a needle guy but I really appreciate how you're making things easier for us, needle players, (this tool and your .map to GMS file converter thing) or for people who can't do anything on Game Maker because they don't know shit about it. (me :Kappa:)

Thanks again and looking forward to see more from you! :)

[Responded to an older version of JGB's post. JGB and I have since talked it out.]

Thank you guys for your kind comments. Interesting point Kyir. I'm really happy hearing in various places that people like the tool. However, JGB, your comments about Kyir's quotes really belong in their own thread as they're not about the tool I made. I really don't want this thread to be derailed with off-topic heated arguments.

Just a friendly reminder. If you want to talk more about this, please don't post in this thread; maybe you can start a discussion thread. No comment on whether or not I agree with your opinions or anything like that. Let's stay on topic. I'm glad you like the tool JGB :) It was definitely worth the effort making it.

Thank you so much for the hard work you've put into this Patrick!

I was pleasantly surprised by some features I didn't know you'd added like dotkid + ∞-jump. The zooming in an out are nice features too. I really like the attention to detail as well; such as the way red spikes fade, albeit quickly, back to white. Overall just a really solid project that expands upon and fixes many of the issues with RMJ.

I made a skin for K3 Secret 4. (It's a little bit more high-def than the original guy tileset, btw.)

EDIT: V1.0.1 - Minispikes and less irritating bg color.
EDIT: V1.0.2 - Fixed minispike bug >.>

When I change skins it spams on me a lot and it's annoying:
https://prntscr.com/8rr1cu

Also can I make skins with changed player sprites? I'd love to do that.

I made a crimson skin.  Enjoy.

Patrick, is there any way to be able to modify the kid's sprite in a skin?
EDIT: Didn't even see that Ario was requesting the same thing.  I guess I'm not the only one.

Thank you Derf, Kady, and everyone else who's given me kind words. It means a lot.

As for custom player sprites, I don't think I'm gonna implement them in an official release. If you want, you can edit the source and use your custom player sprite. Features like this, although neat, would clutter up the UI and make the tool feel bloated. However, I do have a lot of these kind of features on my radar, so small features like this are not out of the question.

EDIT: I just realized that it would be relatively easy to just tack on custom player sprites to a skin. I may or may not do this.

Earlier I had the idea that you could implement a way to separate the size of a visible grid from the size of the grid you are using to place objects. As a person who doesn't use anything above an 8*8 pixel grid, enabling the grid for placing stuff really doesn't help at all since all I can see are just lines all over the place; having it so I can see a 16*16 pixel grid while placing objects on a 4*4 pixel grid would personally help me out, and maybe others too, as I can have a reference point for where things in the room are and still be able to see the room.

Of course, I haven't actually used this yet, so if visible grids aren't a thing and aren't gonna be a thing, ignore this.

Die To The Spike theme! Spriting it was painful... Courtesy to Yoyoyodude1 for original game.

I haven't touched Jtool (the source code, anyway) for 2 months, but the past few days I worked quite a bit on it and added a few new features, so here's version 1.2.0.

The download link is in the original post. Here's the change log:

--- 1.2.0   2/1/16 ---
Easier-to-parse map format
Rearrange depth of blocks, spikes, water
Easily erase objects beneath water
Killer / solid border map property
Check for new version on startup
Show filename in window caption
Include brown block skin
Fix rare map corruption bug
Lower death sound volume
A few misc tweaks
One new easter egg

Not sure if you're interested in making any more updates, but having a feature that traces the kid's movement would come in handy with designing needle or trying to see how vstring depending certain jumps might be.  It would be really easy to implement and it would fit into the current interface pretty well.

Did you try to do something with a custom skin? That seems to be where the error is originating.

I had that problem too and I think it's because you tried to add a skin that doesn't work in the current version. To fix it, try removing the last skin you added before jtool stopped working from the skin folder and the text file in it. If you cant figure out which skin was the last you added, try removing all skins except the default ones and then adding them one by one to see if they work, which is what I did. The skins I can remember that gave me trouble which I downloaded from this thread were Venus and Die to the Spike.

Update! Klazen recently added the ability to edit object's step event code using NSP. So you can make objects move, react to triggers, and all kinds of fancy stuff. Download is in the OP.

Also, just FYI, I don't plan on releasing any more major updates to jtool. I had big plans at one point but they fell through.

For this error, try using version 1.2.0, which was compiled on windows 7 and that makes a difference somehow.

1.2.1 and 1.2.3 were compiled on windows 10. I don't plan on compiling 1.2.3 on windows 7 because i don't have any computer with it installed, so if someone else wants to do that go ahead.

I know I've said multiple times I'm not really interested in updating Jtool, but today I spent a few hours and fixed a few bugs and added a few simple features for a version 1.2.4. Download is in the original post. Here's the change log:

Automatic backups every 5 minutes in case of crashes (can be disabled)
Prompt on close if unsaved work (exPatchWindowClose extension)
Misc bugfixes
Change skin button can go backwards
Shift all objects buttons
Ability to disable update check
Add skin library to About
